Thanks for a good semester Kate, the exhibition didn’t go as well as I hoped as there wasn’t any other exhibitions on level 5 so most of the action was downstairs but we managed to bring up some people so it was all ok. I had fun there it’s always inspiring to se others work.

1. that I take responsibility for collating some of your blog posts, illustraltions, developmental work and all the happy snaps we've taken throughout the class into a lovely little book or cd? We can print them or burn them for the exhibition?

2. yesterdays late lunch chat turned into a discussion about how to further develop and maintain a crumpet class community... you guys could allocate part of next class to discuss what exactly you want and work out how you could get it. As James has taken on the room as a project... he could be involved perhaps?

although i turned up late, i thought soren and stephen gave awesome talks which really (and i meanreally) inspired me to do more in thsi course. i feel i have a lot more to look forward to. cheers kate, soren and stephen.

rationalisation

How much of the design should be rationalised to be acceptable to the audience (or the client). How do you measure that rationalisation? If I just make up a story about the design, which was created purely without a rational reason, would that be regarded as not a valid rationalisation?
It seems that a lot of graphic designs are created through this kind of process. A collection of odd random images and messages that might be put together in a certain way. The story behind it is whatever story that the creator tells to people. It seems graphic designers have more freedom to not to rationalise their designs when compared to industrial designers. But aren’t they designers, too? Aren’t we? Why should there be difference?
Maybe, it is a sort of design process that industrial designers go through as well. Who knows how our good ol’ Starky came up with the citreous juicer? Maybe he doesn’t have any rationalisation behind this. Perhaps he just woke up to it.....

waaaaaa.... so sad! was all keen to chat to you guys about your rapidly developing projects.... well get geared up for an action-packed class next tuesday the 2nd May

we'll have john Gertsakis hanging with us and then we will need to confirm your elected grades which means completed design briefs with planned content and timelines as essential

I know most of you have been redefining the parameters for your makor projects but for those of you who have dropped off the radar - ya need to pop into the crumpet zone for a wee chat! for those of you blogging madly I will devote some serious headspace to checking that all out this week (although Braden... in past weeks I've not been able to access your blog via the crumpet blog link)

Hey lovelies.... good news... I have organised John Gertsakis to come join the crumpet class on the 2nd May. He's a guru when it comes to product stewardship, eco-design and has his own business conducting this kinda business ; product ecology. He is a great speaker but will be integrating our class on a more informal basis

I have also arranged for 2 visitors later on in the semester who will pick up on this "industrial designers.... what the hell are we doing?" stream of consciouness running through the crumpet course.

They are stephen mushin (a crazed, inspirational eco-warrior) and soren luckins of Buro North (a hyper-entrprenerial design glamour guru)

So I've been busy... what about you folks??? My inbox is yet to be bombarded with design briefs so get busy or this semester will just pass us on by!

I would just like to thank you all for your contributions to last weeks class... it was great to have you all enthused and throwing your opinions out there for the contemplating ... whether it was for assessment stuff or your own work. From our conversations of recent times I am suggesting that some of the ideas are factored into future classes

Your guys clearly value each others opinion and so this idea of meeting in small groups to bounce ideas around and get feedback is a sure-fire winner

Also- you guys are pro grade election and so this coming week you can all get on with that

And keen to draw - lovely don't forget the 'drawing maddness' class next week... bring drawings from past semesters work and a whole lotta materials and papers etc for drawing with

I will be showing you some visualisation examples in the morning....(prob in the big class) and then we will retire to our spacey quaters to learn a little about perspective drawing and then illustrate a big pile-o-stuff.

In the afternoon... Mr CLinton has something he wishes to share and I recommend that we get on with the briefing for projects.

Fear of Peer Review (or any review)

I don't have much to say about peer review, but I have an idea to overcome the fear of peer review or other kinds of formal/informal review. Main aspect of the review that we (at least I) fear about is that I don't know what other people might think about what I have done. I guess I'm kind of contradicting myself by saying that I fear the review because it's process of other people giving me their opinion (which is called review.) What I'm trying to say is that if we have some sort of regular, small group, very informal, reviewish session of sharing ideas and opinion about other people's projects would be great way to overcome our fear of reviewing and also great way to improve the way we communicate our ideas to others.
Just a thought...

The Crumpet Class Manifesto

The crumpet class is a place for a designer to find their way of approaching industrial design studio projects. The class is a place for active brains to create a hub of design-related activity. Students of this class will assist each other with research investigations, constructive criticism and provocations. The tutor of the crumpet class will endeavour to respond to the emerging design instincts of the students will the view to encourage, challenge and support the development of their individual design methodologies.

The crumpet class is a place of good food, great music and provides an atmosphere for students that compliments design activities. Outside class, there is an active discussion taking place on the crumpet blog for those who are bloggingly inclined.

whats this - were not allowed a title for the post now! fascist blogger king!
anyway, i started off with a bit of drawing, figuring out what i want for my luminaire. I tried a bit fo the game sort of idea matching up either of the light sources with a emotion and a 'powerword'. its strange trying to put the game idea into action, especially when theres only me to do it! it was great int eh corp game being able to run ideas through with other people almost immediately. I'd love to see if we cna have some brief and quick critiqueing and feedback sessions in crumpet. my skethces are kinda crappy, though to tell the truth i havent put my heart into them, but i'd love to see what people think of the idea behind it.
